John grew up in Columbia, with his twin brother and younger sister, raised by their single mother, Karla, in Columbia’s low-income neighborhoods. From a young age, John has had an entrepreneurial and service-oriented mindset.
John met his wife Megan in high school. They both attended Hickman High School and now have three daughters who attend Columbia Public Schools. John works in the construction industry and has been with the same company for over 20 years.
Since about 2020, John has been heavily involved in our local public schools. He advocates for students and parents and organized community members to encourage our school district to re-open and allow students to get back to in-seat learning. He also co-founded an online public forum for transparency and accountability at Columbia Public Schools.
John helped inform community members about Missouri ESAs (Education Scholarship Accounts). He's also the co-chair of the Mid Missouri Braver Angels Alliance, an organization working to depolarize politics and bring people together. The organization leaders are 50% blue (Democrat) and 50% red (Republican). They meet monthly, discuss a wide range of topics, and work to find understanding and common ground.
The 47th District has approximately 35,000 constituents, residing in the western part of the city of Columbia and the towns of Harrisburg, Rocheport, Sturgeon, Midway, Riggs, Rucker and Woodlandville.
We envision an America with respectful embrace of political disagreements, where civic friendship flourishes and competing perspectives strengthen our nation.
Embracing values of respect, humility, honesty, and responsible citizenship, our goal is not to change people’s views of issues, but to change their views of each other.

John Potter co-founded this Facebook group in 2021, to provide a platform for community members to have their voices heard, after the public school shutdowns and becoming more involved in the district.
The group currently has over 15K unique visitors per month.
There must be more options on the table for K-12 education, especially for low-income families and those residing in boundaries of low-achieving schools.
The instability of, and demand on our electric power grid continues to increase, due to electric cars, electric public buses, bikes, mowers, all-electric public housing, as well as the City of Columbia's adoption of the Climate Action & Adaptation Plan in 2019.
The plan decreases the use of fossil fuels in public housing and other public-owned buildings, including natural gas for heat. It also includes goals to incentivize and regulate private property to be all-electric.
Nuclear is a renewable, reliable, affordable and carbon neutral way to produce energy.
